More than 20 people have been arrested in specific cases of assault on police officers and destruction of government property in Kolkata and Howrah during the BJP's ‘Nabanna Cholo’ march. The saffron camp, however, has maintained their stance that none of their workers were involved in violence.

Police used batons, water cannons, tear gas shells and stun grenades at several locations to disperse BJP workers who were found pelting stones and glass bottles.

Parts of Bengal turned into a battlefield as BJP activists clashed with the police during the protest march. Several police officers and saffron camp members, including leaders Mina Devi Purohit and Swapan Dasgupta, were reportedly injured in the melee.

Suvendu Adhikari was caught on camera resisting an arrest by a ‘lady’ police official during the BJP's protest march in Kolkata – the video of which was then shared by the ruling TMC.

Security arrangements were beefed up in Kolkata with heavy barricading at Hastings near the state government's new Secretariat.

Adhikari was among several BJP leaders detained on their way to the secretariat ‘Nabanna.’ The Bengal unit of the BJP has also shared video footage of police thrashing BJP workers.

Thousands of BJP supporters from across the state started arriving in Kolkata and neighbouring Howrah on Tuesday morning to take part in the saffron party's ‘Nabanna Cholo Abhijan’.

A video shared by news agency ANI shows visuals from Golf Green and Lake Gardens area of Kolkata in waterlogged condition. Commuters on cycles could be seen facing difficulty in paddling on roads inundated with water.

The BJP has made several arrangements to ensure a huge turnout for the rally for which the administration has not granted permission and some untoward incidents during the day would be not unlikely.
